Tesla is rolling out new firmware in hopes of solving heat pump problems

Tesla's much talked about problems with heat pumps over the last many weeks will be solved by a firmware update, CEO Elon Musk commented last weekend.

"Correcting this is a high priority," Musk said Saturday. The heat pump has been an integral part of Tesla's plan to combat range reduction in colder climates. In recent weeks, however, it has been shown that the heat pump architecture is not efficient in extremely low temperatures. Owners in Canada and other extremely cold areas of North America report problems with defrosting and demisting the windshield, a problem that the heat pump would normally solve due to its unique construction.

Government agencies in both Canada and the United States have launched investigations into the issues, only to see what corrections could be presented to owners to resolve the issues. Transport Canada, the country's transportation agency, launched an "Issue Assessment Investigation" late last week after receiving a total of sixteen complaints regarding heat pump problems. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, followed suit and communicated with Tesla to find out the problems and how they could be resolved.

Tesla last week launched a software update to address the issues. However, after receiving the update, many owners announced that the issues persist. Tesla had to re-examine the problems and try another way to solve the problem. Musk said Saturday that Tesla may have found the answer.

"Firmware fix to recalibrate heat pump expansion valve rolling out now," he added.

Unfortunately, there is no way to determine if this is a solution that will ultimately solve the problem. Tesla may need to consider other options in the coming days if this does not solve the operating problems with the heat pump. Only time will tell whether changing the heat pump expansion valve will eliminate some of these problems for owners as the coldest stretch of winter seemed to arrive.

If you have received the firmware update, please contact me at [email protected] or to [email protected] to tell us about your experience.
