Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series gets a name and a teaser video

Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power teaser video.

Amazon has hyped it Lord of the Rings TV series for a while now, but details have been sparse. That changed a bit this week when Amazon finally announced the name of the series and released its first teaser video.

The name of the series is Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.

The title is a mouthful (and perhaps redundant), but it is related to the time period in which the show is set. Amazon has previously said that the series takes place in the second age, the era prior to the events depicted in the author JRR Tolkien's most famous books (The Hobbits and Lord of the Rings trilogy).

In the Second Age, the leaders of Middle Earth carried power rings, but some of these rings were controlled by Sauron's "a ring", which of course is the subject of much drama in the books and movies most people know so well.

The title of this series suggests that it will tell the story of how these leaders fell to Sauron's strengths or influence. That assumption is supported by a statement from the series' showrunners in a press release from Amazon:

This is a title that we imagine could live on the backbone of a book alongside JRR Tolkien's other classics. The rings of power unites all the great stories from the second age of Middle-earth: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor and the last alliance of elves and men. Until now, audiences have only seen the story of The One Ring on screen, but before there was one, there were many ... and we're excited to share the epic story of them all.

However, the teaser video is not much help if you are looking for more information or actual footage. It just shows vague images (similar to a modern prestige TV credit sequence) depicting the forging of one of the rings of power. Meanwhile, voiceover shares the famous quote you've seen before if you've read the books or seen other adaptations:

Three rings to the elven kings under the sky. Seven for the dwarves in their halls of stone. Nine for mortal men, sentenced to death. One for the Lord of Darkness on his dark throne in the land of Mordor, where the shadows lie.

Amazon has recently relied heavily on genre content to bolster its Prime Video streaming service. In addition to the new Tolkien adaptation, Amazon recently premiered a series based on Robert Jordans Wheel of Time books.

Customizations also include video games: Amazon is moving forward with a TV customization of Fall out franchise, and a recent report claimed that Amazon is close to getting a deal to adapt Mass effect.

While Fall out and Mass effect does not yet have release dates, Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power do. It is scheduled to start streaming on Amazon Prime Video on September 2, 2022.
