High cholesterol: Symptoms include xanthelasma

Some small studies suggest that xanthelasma may be a risk factor for death from coronary heart disease, even though cholesterol levels are normal. However, more studies are needed to confirm this.

To be tested

Since high cholesterol typically does not cause symptoms, you can only find out if you have it by a blood test.

According to the NHS, your GP may suggest taking a test if they think your cholesterol levels may be high.

"This may be due to your age, weight or another condition you have (such as high blood pressure or diabetes)."
