Holly Ridge, NC Two Marines were killed in a crash in a military vehicle coming from Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville on Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.
Two other Marines were driven to a local hospital around noon. 13.00 after the crash on NC Highway 210 and US Route 17.
"As it turned right - the vehicle is a 7-ton military vehicle - it lost control and overturned and shot the Marines sitting in the back of the truck onto the roadway," said Sgt. Devin Rich with NC Highway Patrol.
Nineteen Marines were on the truck when it overturned, he said.
The two Marines killed were part of the 2nd Marine Logistics Group based in Camp Lejeune.
Diego Feliciano-Gutierrez, a former Marine living in Jacksonville, said Marines sit inside benches without seat belts on the 5-tonne vehicles.
He said he could not imagine how scary it would be to be inside a military vehicle during a rollover.
Investigators were at the scene of the accident to determine exactly what happened. The road is still blocked but is expected to reopen in the next hour, according to a spokesman for the NC Highway Patrol.
The names of the Marines who were killed will not be released until their relatives are notified.
