Nashville police release bodycam video in fatal I-65 shooting

A screenshot from body-worn camera footage of Metro Nashville police officer James Kidd shows the stance that led to officers fatally shooting a man on I-65 in Nashville Thursday afternoon.

Nashville police released a video with excerpts of body camera footage late Thursday night after officers shot dead a man on Interstate 65 earlier that day.

The man identified as Landon Eastep, 37, had been sitting on a crash barrier on the shoulder of I-65 at mile marker 76 when a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper went to check on him.

At one point, Eastep produced a box cutter, according to preliminary information released by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

The trooper tried to negotiate with Eastep, and soon, TBI said, also stopped an officer from the Mount Juliet police, along with back-up officers from the MNPD and additional THP troopers.

"Negotiations with Eastep, which aimed to convince him to surrender, continued for about 30 minutes," TBI reported. "At some point, it appears that the man is adjusting his posture and reaching out for what was later identified as a cylindrical metal object at his waist."
